Celebration of Courage Courage isn’t the absence of fear- it’s choosing to act in spite of it. On Monday, February 9, two Pawnee students showed exactly what that looks like. While riding the bus to school, seventh grader Emma Ehmke and fifth grader Maverik Jolly were faced with a frightening situation when their bus driver, Janelle Robinson, experienced a medical emergency. Despite the uncertainty and fear, both students remained calm and immediately stepped up to help. Mrs. Robinson was able to radio the school to alert them that she needed assistance. When the Superintendent asked her to call 911, Emma was already on the phone, communicating the situation to the 911 operator and providing the location of the bus. Emma and Maverik stayed by Mrs. Robinson’s side, talking to her and helping keep her alert until help arrived. School personnel arrived quickly, followed shortly by local first responders. When adults arrived on the scene, Emma and Maverik answered every question they were asked, providing critical information. The students continued on to school, while Mrs. Robinson was transported to the hospital by helicopter for further care. Today, Pawnee School honored Emma and Maverik at an all-school assembly, recognizing them along with some first responders for their bravery and quick thinking. Superintendent Bret Robinson presented the students with Certificates and Badges of Courage in recognition of their heroic actions. Mrs. Robinson presented the girls with a token of appreciation and hugs. Their calm leadership in a moment of crisis reflects the very best of Pawnee. It truly is a great day to be a Pawnee Coyote!

On the 17th of February we will hit Lunar New Year, this year is the year of the fire horse. As part of our social studies curriculum we are learning about holidays and customs from abroad and how they have come to the US and are now part of the patchwork quilt that is the United States. The students are practicing a traditional Chinese symbol for "good luck" 福 (Fú) in these photographs. As we draw closer to the actual holiday I'll be introducing some of the fun activities folks from many Asian countries do for Lunar New Year!

Today we practiced some multiplication facts with the dice and Yahtzee! Students are learning the individual digits portion first before we learn Straights and Full House, etc. so they know the basics. Fun learning activities like this are a simple and fun way to practice maths!

Want to help a local child have a great Christmas? The Pawnee High School FBLA Chapter, in cooperation with Friendship Alliance Church, is sponsoring a gift giving tree to benefit local children. Here is how it works. Take an ornament off the tree located in the school lobby and buy a gift for the age and sex of the child as indicated on the ornament. Then wrap the gift, attach the ornament to the gift and put it under the tree by Monday, December 15th. FAChurch and FBLA thanks you for your support.

Students in third and fourth grade are practicing making tally marks using an eight-sided dice. Once they have all the tally marks, the students will take these data and create a bar graph to share their findings. Reading graphs and charts is a standard in both maths and sciences in the state of Colorado. Dice rolling is a simple way of showing the data and creating an easy way to present said data.
